The key skills and concepts are identified based on the following criteria Must be part of an NCEES Exam Topic, not outside of the realm of the Depth Sessions Must be testable within 6 minutes, not deeply involved Must be commonly used in the field of practice, not rare and obscure Must be the application of a theory, not the theory itself.

Fundamentals of Engineering Examination

What are the requirements for my state of licensure? What is the fee? What are the years of experience? Most important step in an engineer's career The professional engineering license is one of the most important steps in an engineers career. It allows the individual to legally practice engineering in the state of licensure. This credential can also help the engineer to obtain higher compensation and provide the first step in developing a credible reputation. The one exception is California, which only requires 2 years of work experience. Up to 25 years of work experience in lieu of Education.

Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE)

Other Requirements Each state also requires that the engineer pass the FE exam and meet other state specific requirements like, a number of years of experience, an application fee, licensure fee and passing the State's exam on engineering rules and laws.

Basic Requirements for Licensure

Exam Waiver Requirements What is a waiver? However, in some situations, the Board may waive the examination requirement for one or more exams. This means that an applicant who meets certain criteria see below would not be required to take one or both of the examinations. See Board rule If you have taken and passed one or both examinations in Texas or in another state, you do not need to apply for a waiver. You can apply using the standard application process click here for more information. Waiver Law and Rules The Texas Board of Engineers has adopted rules that modify the requirements for licensure by a waiver of examinations. Effective January 1, , licensure by waiver of the Principles and Practice PE Examination will be limited to current engineering educators with a Ph. All other applicants for standard licensure as a Professional Engineer will be required to take the PE exam. Applicants must meet the waiver requirements Experience cannot be anticipated and must have been gained by the date of application.

The Board will consider waiver requests from individuals meeting the following requirements. Waivers may be granted if the applicant provides sufficient evidence of their qualifications through creditable engineering experience and references. An applicant is not eligible to request a waiver of the FE exam if they have failed any FE exam within the previous two years. The applicant must report all FE exam failures in any jurisdiction. An applicant is not eligible to request a waiver of the FE exam if they have failed the FE exam three or more times in any jurisdictions.

PE Application Process

The exam consists of questions and is given during a 6-hour session, of which 5 hours and 20 minutes is designated as time for answering the questions. The remaining time includes a tutorial, presented at the beginning of the session, and an optional minute break. Examinees must apply to be tested in one of seven fields: chemical, civil, electrical and computer, environmental, industrial and systems, mechanical, and other disciplines.

FE/PE Exam Review

Prior to , the exam was divided into two 4-hour sessions with a lunch break in between. In , content changes in the exam were instituted to make it entirely discipline-specific, with a plan of weaving general engineering subject matter e. A concern was that, while most undergraduate engineering students are in fact exposed to most of these subjects, they may not necessarily take courses in specialized topics such as thermodynamics and fluid mechanics. In other cases, topics and subtopics have been merged or combined. Those who pass the exam are sometimes designated Engineer In Training or Engineer Intern , depending on their state's licensure board's approach to recognizing those who are partway through the licensure process.

Actual licensure can then be applied for and awarded upon successful completion of the PE exam. The standard time of work experience which may need to be under a Professional Engineer is four years in most US states, for graduates of an ABET-accredited engineering program. Taking the exam[ edit ] Writing tools and scratch paper may not be brought to the testing site.

Examination Pass/Fail Rates

A sharpie pen and a clear plastic sheet laid over grid paper will be provided as scratch paper for working problems. No calculators are allowed except for those specifically approved by NCEES; these models have no programming or communications capabilities to prevent possibilities of cheating. The only reference material that may be used is a handbook which is provided to examinees on the testing program.

Engineer in Training (EIT)

For study purposes, the reference handbook may be obtained from the NCEES website or by purchasing a hard copy. However, examinees may not bring their own copies to the test site; they must use the ones issued to them by the testing program.

Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE) | College of Engineering

How to prepare for the FE exam What is on the exam? The FE exam consists of problems, and the great majority are multiple-choice. There is no penalty for guessing on problems. However, a handful of them are multiple-answer, point-and-click, drag-and-drop, or fill-in-the-blank type of problems, and these are harder to guess on. The lists of specific topics covered on the FE exam can be found here. We know engineering courses are hard, but what really adds a level to the FE exam is having to apply knowledge from all of those courses in one sitting! What is taking the FE exam like? What is the experience like? You are given 5 hours and 20 minutes to solve problems total. The problems are split in half into two sections.

NCEES FE exam information

After you complete the first section of the exam, which is problems, you move on to the second section and are given an optional minute break in between. The minute break does not count against your allotted 5 hours and 20 minutes to take the exam. The FE exam takes place on a computer where you have access to the screen with the problems and a searchable pdf-like version of the FE Reference Handbook. The FE Reference Handbook is over pages long and has all the equations you might need to solve the problems you could encounter. The FE Reference Handbook only has the formulas you might need for the exam, the Handbook does not include example problems.

PE Application Deadlines and Exam Dates

Do note that many conceptual-theoretical problems do not use equations, and therefore the FE Reference Handbook is of no help during the exam. You are not allowed to take anything into the computer-lab exam room other than your FE-approved calculator. The person proctoring the exam will provide you with a spiral notebook and thin markers that you can use to perform hand calculations. We've gotten the basics of the exam down. Over 5 hours is a long time for an exam, and that's going to be tiring and difficult on its own, but what's really adding to the challenge of the FE exam here? Here are two big factors: Time per question You have just under 3 minutes to solve each problem, 2 minutes and 54 seconds to be precise. Some will be solvable quickly such as plug-and-chug and conceptual problems. Sometimes just knowing how to solve them with calculator tricks will be the key. Others may take longer, especially if you don't exactly know how to solve them when you see them or where to find them in the FE Reference Handbook.

Texas Board of Professional Engineers

One thing that makes the FE exam easier is that you can flag problems for review and return to them later. Then you can go back and spend extra time on those trickier problems. But how much extra time can you afford to spend? Extra time spent on a problem can hurt later in the exam. Distributing your time between the two sections Once you finish the first section and move on to the second section, you are not allowed to go back and revise questions from the first section. Therefore, you must determine how much time out of your 5 hrs and 20 minutes you should allocate to each of the two sections. You should strive to roughly distribute your time between them evenly.

Is the FE Exam hard? | PrepFE

A mistake would be spending 4 hours on the first section first questions , leaving you only 1 hour and 20 minutes to answer the remaining questions in the 2nd section. So not only do you have to solve individual problems quickly, but now you have to strategize how much time you decide to spend on each half of the exam! It's a cost-benefit analysis you'll have to do on the fly. PrepFE also polled the community about timing and asked whether examinees ran out of time or not on the exam. Running out of time means a lot of guessing problems at the end - a situation you can avoid with adequate preparation. Pro tip: Get used to the real FE exam experience by doing FE practice problems under time pressure Use an FE exam prep service such as PrepFE as seen below to get you used to the time pressure you will experience during the real FE exam. We've seen some of the challenges the FE exam presents. Let's take a look at the bigger picture, the passing rates. But in this table, the NCEES is strictly reporting examinees who fit three criteria: 1 first time exam taker, 2 attended an accredited school, and 3 took the exam within 12 months of graduation.

To see the pass rates that includes all examinees first-time, repeat takers, and disregard to graduation date , you can look at the NCEES's annual publication called Squared , dating back to At PrepFE, we've looked through them and have some findings for you.

Some licensing boards may require you to file a separate application and pay an application fee as part of the approval process to qualify you for a seat for an NCEES exam. Your licensing board may have additional requirements. Reasonable accommodations are available for examinees who meet certain eligibility criteria and sufficiently document their request. Exam specifications For more information on the format of the exam and the topics covered, download the PE Petroleum exam specifications PDF. Reference materials and exam prep A petroleum handbook developed by the Society of Petroleum Engineers is the only reference material that can be used during the exam. You will be provided with the electronic reference handbook during the exam.
